During the consultation we looked briefly at some typical examples of the expression in use as shown by the following citations:

The first extract from the draft shows a problem with the transitivity of the expression, the student attempting a passive construction. The second and third extracts show problems with the collocating verb, have, and give being used instead of show. In that context, give does collocate with decrease/increase, but with the meaning of 'cause', 'lead to' rather than 'exhibit', 'demonstrate'.
