Route 66 Trip, July 12

The Wigwam hotel proved very refreshing. No Internet though, that's the first where I haven't been able to upload.

We had breakfast in front of Pete and Val's wigwam with stuff we'd bought in a Safeway opposite. Healthier.

Mark seems to be claiming ownership.

After breakfast we rode off to the site of a huge meteor crater which was created 50,000 years ago. The park there was very interesting and the explanations plentiful as we walked around the crater rim: it is over a kilometer across.

This is a photo of a photo on display in the visitor centre:

Soon after, the intense heat gave way to a sudden shower so we three bikers chickened out and ate our lunch in the cafe at the meteor park. Later in the day we got caught again and it is a struggle to put on waterproofs in the wind and rain.

As usual, dressed in the height of fashion. My gloves were clearly embarassed to be near me and aided by the wind were trying to slope off unnoticed.

We had great riding near Flagstaff. Pine forests, altitude around 6,000 feet. The scent of pine in the air, not too hot.

Finding and staying on R66 often tricky with sudden signs announcing end of pavement, which we three chicken out at. (Riding a motorbike is already somewhat dangerous, and riding on gravel or a dirt surface is not much safer than riding through snow.)

We arrived at 3pm at Williams. We are booked in for 2 nights here, so that this afternoon we get a rest and tomorrow a chance just to see the Grand Canyon without thinking of Route 66.
