Suppose you want to find adjectives in L1 position before a word like ANALYSIS.

 

The search-word would be

 

<w AJ?>* analysis

 

(The tag for an adjective in the BNC World Edition is <w plus AJ0,AJC or AJ0, then we need the closing > and an asterisk to tell WordSmith that the search isn't necessarily bounded to the right by a space, then we specify the word analysis.)
