Route 66 Trip, July 11

My trusty steed
is still going strong having carried me over 2,200 miles. We are now in Holbrook, Arizona.

This morning we again set off moderately early at 8am

The first point of interest was the Continental Divide, over 7,200 feet in altitude. This is a watershed where any rain which falls either goes into the Rio Grande and out into the Gulf of Mexico, or else into the Pacific by some other river.

Wherever we go we see huge trains, as Interstate 40, Route 66 and the railroad often run side by side.

Three locos at the front and another three at the back. As you see, the containers are double-decked. Most had names of Far Eastern companies painted on them.

Soon after we came to the Red Rock park, apparently used for filming:

and stopped for morning coffee at the Hotel El Rancho

As usual we had troubles following the original Route 66:

but eventually got through on the Interstate to a small village called Navajo (in a massive area of Navajo territory).

where Pete admired the huge trucks. They are miles biggeer than the ones in the UK and are fearsome. Luckily they seem to be well and courteously driven, but they can shed large strips of rubber from their tyres onto the roadway.

This was a sign on a BMW at the same place, and also there we could read

as we ate our Subway sandwiches.

In the afternoon we went in the car to see the Petrified Forest National Park.

This is a petrified log

and Nell not too petrified

The landscape was rather lunar:

The railroad goes near by.

After that excellent visit we rode on to Holbrook, where we stayed at the Wigwam Motel (on Route 66, where else).

The yard had old vehicles between and beside each wigwam.

Walked back after a steakhouse meal, past a line of trucks to our wigwam and thence to bed.
