Route 66 Trip, July 3

Chicago to Mclean, Illionois. Wow!

The Harley is like a big old armchair with indigestion -- comfy, noisy and decidedly retro. We picked up the bikes after a leisurely breakfast in downtown Chicago.

A lot of time was spent signing the insurance clauses and getting the keys etc. but then we were off into the Chicago sprawl of interlocking highways. Flat land and not exciting, large factories and malls. Then some wandering, trying to find our way onto the True Gospel Route 66, which is a matter of interpretation and some reading of authoritative sources which I suspect we had neglected. We were on the IS and suffering with the toll system, ending up ignoring a toll and having to pay it later by internet. At this point the car got separated from the 3 bikes.

However eventually we turned off the busy Interstate and got into a little town called Gardner (where we again wandered in a circle) we found ourselves on Route 66, the 3 bikes met up with the car at Odell.

A classic gas station which R66 enthusiasts preserve; they had met up and when we arrived they invited us to eat and gave us fruit and drinks too.

Later we rode on to Pontiac and saw some wall art there:

Finally ending up in Mclean. We did about 160 miles today.
